Qi Shu left home at 16, having been raised in a very reserved family. She said, “I’m a typical Taiwanese girl. My parents weren’t very well educated and they often resorted to beating their children to convey messages. Slowly, I developed a habit of non-communication. I was, in fact, too scared to say anything…my relationship with my family was strained when I left home…but I wasn’t entirely cut off” (iurgonotmis.wordpress.com).

At 17, she moved to Hong Kong and began in the soft-core porn industry, appearing on the cover of Penthouse Hong Kong in February 1995 and the Chinese edition of Playboy. “I was naïve. My agent told me it’s a form of art, throwing terms like artistic and aesthetics and basically coaxed me into doing it.” She figured it would be a token of her youth to remember when she was old. Qi Shu added, “I didn’t stop to think I was doing something immoral or wrong – until seeing my mother teary-eyed…because no one ever told me what I was doing is to be frowned upon.”

Qi Shu rose from nude pictorials and soft-core sex films to mainstream success. Her first film was in 1996, entitled “Sex & Zen II,” and she played the role of Mirage lady/Sui-Tsui. She gradually crossed-over and in 2005, she won the Golden Horse Best Actress Award for her role in “Best of Times.”

While she could marry, Qi Shu said, “When you’re used to being by yourself, you don’t yarn for romance as much.” Though she did say she would freeze her eggs before turning 35 in case her Mr. Right doesn’t show up. “When I find a man who I want to have a family with, I will unfreeze the egg.”
