Leslie Mann was born in San Francisco, though she grew up in Newport Beach, California. Her mother raised her. As for her father, Leslie said, “I don’t really have one. I mean, he does exist, but I have zero relationship with him.”

Growing up, she was teased about her voice. “So it’s kinda nice that now I’m making a lot of money with it. I tried to get into a commercial workshop class when I was in high school, and the woman wouldn’t let me in to the class because of my voice. She said that I would never work as an actress.”

Leslie Mann described herself as a kid as shy and “kind of pent up.” After graduating from Corona del Mar High school, she studied acting as well as comedy improvisation. Her career began at 18 and she appeared in a variety of commercials. Her big break came, however, when she was chosen in an open audition from 500 other actresses for a role in “The Cable Guy.”

That role would change her life because it is where she met her future husband, writer and director Judd Apatow. Supposedly, Apatow turned to his colleagues after she auditioned and said, “There goes the future Mrs. Apatow.” They married in 1997. She is the mother of two children, Maude and Iris. “When I was younger and was totally obsessed, [my career] ruled my life. I really couldn’t think about anything else. Then I got pregnant and became a mother, and suddenly nothing was about me anymore.”

As for her husband’s use of their private life for films, Leslie Mann said, “Everything is discussed beforehand…it’s fictional. The feeling, the emotion is real. But it’s fictional.” As for comedy, she said, “Comedy is hard to do…I don’t understand why people think it’s harder to do drama than it is to do comedy. It doesn’t get respect. It’s hard. It’s really hard.”

In 2012, Elle named her “Hollywood’s Queen of Comedy.” Leslie Mann and her family reside in Los Angeles.
