Jewel Belair Staite was born on June 2, 1982 in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada. Being the youngest of seven children, she had to find a way to set herself apart from her siblings. This didn't wind up taking to long, as she was discovered at a shopping mall by an agent when she was just five years old, beginning her career as a child model soon after. Of course, this was just the tip of the iceberg, as she soon moved her way into acting in Canadian television commercials.

Jewel's love of screen acting lead her to attend the Vancouver Film School, while also participating in youth theatre there. As early as 1991, she was already starring on her first television movie, which was titled "Posing: Inspired by Three Real Stories." Though the part was small, it lead to bigger and better, as Jewel was cast on her first television series, "Space Cases," by 1996. At the very same time, she was also starring on the Disney series, "Fast Forward," which was very popular for its time.

Of course, while Jewel went on to star on several more television series including "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show" and "Da Vinci's Inquest," it wasn't until 2002 that the young actress would hit mega stardom, regardless of if she knew it at the time or not. Back then, she was cast as one of the leads on the space western series, "Firefly," a show that would be cancelled after its initial season, but gain a cult following that no one could have anticipated. While this lead to a spin-off film, "Serenity," which Jewel would also star in, it also kicked her sci-fi career into high gear, and would lead to many roles in similarly themed genre shows such as "Stargate: Atlantis" and "State of Syn" down the line.
