WildStar Launches to Login Issues Due to DDOS Attack [UPDATES, LONG QUEUES]

Update [Launch Day, June 3rd]: Free server transfers have been made available to spread out populations and reduce queues. Also, a patch has been released which improves performance. The woes of early start are officially over!

Update [Sunday, June 1st]: The first day of launch wasn’t perfect, but was better than most MMOs out there. The initial login server DDOS was fixed within two hours. Servers were taken offline for a couple of hotfixes, but nothing major. The only nuances are long server queues, which are getting shorter as capacity is safely raised, and a few bugged quests here and there. On Tuesday we’ll see how the servers handle the game’s “official” release.

Update [9:05AM]: The login servers appear to be A-OK now. However, most of the servers have lengthy queues. I’m currently in a 1 hour queue to play on Widow. Get in a queue early and bring your patience.

Update [1:14AM]: I finally got in, but look at this queue I’ve been placed into:

Clicking ‘Change Realm’ leads to an empty server list which I can’t back out of. I might just hang up my hat and get some rest.

Update [1:03AM]: Another update on Reddit:

Edit: 1:03 PDT: More resolved. Big flood of folks just got in, including us in the Carbine office. Are we over the hump? Will more happen?

Update [12:53AM]: The following was added to Carbine’s Reddit post:

Edit: 00:45 PDT I’ve heard from a few folks it’s a confirmed DDOS attack (real time updates, may change, fog of war, etc.). Partially handled. Servers taking in some players now, player counts rising. Ninjitsu continues.

Update [12:50AM]: Things are beginning to smooth out. The official WildStar Twitter account posted the following:

It appears we are through the worst of it. Players are jumping into Nexus! Will post again soon with updates.

Original Story: WildStar is here! Or… it’s supposed to be. Since 12:01AM login issues have prevented players from getting to the character creation screen, let alone able to get into Nexus and play. Myself? I’ve been trying to log in repeatedly since 12:00AM (it’s 12:35AM now), and have received a variety of errors during that time.

Carbine Studios have put in a bunch of work to prepare for launch, so you’re probably wondering why this is happening. Well, it appears there has been a DDOS (denial of service) attack on the login servers by an unknown entity. The development team posted the following on Reddit:

Appears to be DDOS attack – under investigation/working on doing network ninjitsu to cure.

Sorry for interruption working on it!

This is real time info, so may change.

Only minutes later Guild Wars 2‘s servers were brought down, supposedly from the same DDOS source. It seems clear that this is an attack, after all. But who would do such a thing?

Several Carbine team members have gone on Twitter to post that engineers are working hard to remedy the issue. There is no timeline for the fix, but they’re going to work through the night to make sure they win this battle against faceless hackers.

On the positive side of things, WildStar is officially playable, which is awesome. Carbine posted the following 12:00AM launch celebration on Vine:

Once things are fixed, we will be playing on the Dominion side of the Widow [US] server. We hope to see you there!
