Tropfest Is Saved, Will Go Down On Valentines Day 2016

Good news for short-film makers and those who like to sit on a cramped picnic rug in a park sculling wine, with Sydney film competition and Australian cultural stalwart Tropfest, announcing it has received a last-minute windfall and will go ahead in February next year.

Earlier last month the very shit news that the hugely popular and influential festival was being canned due to “a terrible and irresponsible mismanagement of Tropfest funds but today the organisers are thrilled to announce that insurance company CGU has stepped in with a lifeline full of $$$$.

“There was national outcry when the iconic event was cancelled earlier this year, but CGU’s support will now enable the Festival to be staged on Sunday 14 February 2016 in Centennial Parklands, Sydney,” reads the statement, confirming the festivals return to the usual home of Centennial Parklands.

“Tropfest is a great festival, providing unique platforms for talented filmmakers through its events and initiatives, and we are excited to be able to help them get back on their feet,” CGU Commercial Insurance Chief Executive Ben Bessell has said.

“Supporting this fantastic cultural event is about creating a renewed opportunity for Tropfest and all those small businesses associated with the event to continue to thrive and get some business done.”
