Karl Stefanovic To Appear In New ‘Independence Day’ Movie

You read correctly — Today Show host and gaffe machine from down under, Karl Stefanovic, will appear in the upcoming Independence Day sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence.

As News Corp Australia reports, Stefanovic announced his role on the Today Show this morning, telling viewers, “It’s not easy playing me. I play myself, which is very complex. Getting to the bottom of my own personality is not easy.”

Describing the opportunity as a “breakthrough role”, Stefanovic said he travelled to the set of the film in Albuquerque, New Mexico last week.

“I went onto the set and there was this blue screen thing happening and then [cast and crew] all sat down and they said ‘Righto, there’s going to be a speaking part given to one of you press people’ from around the world,” Stefanovic said.

“You’re going to have to see the movie to see this speaking part. It may not be long, it may not be very involved, and it may be awful.”

Speaking with Pedestrian, Stefanovic said he plays a journalist who speaks with the American president — played by Sela Ward — at the White House during an alien invasion 20 years after the original film in 1996.

“It’s true. I play the role of an international reporter at the White House during an alien invasion. Big stretch. One line. May or may not make the cut. I went for the role of Will Smith but wasn’t believable.”

Independence Day: Resurgence is set to his cinemas in 2016, and will feature actors such as Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and Vivica A. Fox. Will Smith will not be returning, but at least Karl will be there.

Some BIG news folks... Karl will feature in the Blockbuster sequel for Independence Day! #Today9
