The Lego Movie Producers Develop Animated/Live Action Hybrid Comedy For Fox

Last spring, The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller returned to television with Fox’s Last Man on Earth. And the duo’s next TV project may be even more bizarre than that show!

According to Deadline, Lord and Miller are producing a Son of Zahn, a hybrid of animation and live action that stars an animated barbarian who returns home after a decade away only to find his son is a moody and withdrawn teenage, played in live action by Johnny Pemberton. The potential series will also explore the barbarian’s relationship with his ex-wife, and his struggle to deal with “the banality of suburban life” after “waging actual war in his distant, animated world.”

Pemberton had a supporting role in Lord and Miller’s 21 Jump Street movie, and its sequel 22 Jump Street last year. Pemberton has also appeared in Family Tools, Perception, New Girl, Aim High, and The Watch.

Son of Zahn was created and written by Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, the former showrunners of FX’s Wilfred. Fox has given Son of Zahn a presentation order, which means that an eight-to-ten minute demo for the series will be filmed later this summer. Agnew and Jorne will be the showrunners of Son of Zahn if it gets picked up to series by Fox.

Lord and Miller recently signed on to write and produce an animated Spider-Man movie for Sony, which will be released in 2018.
