Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has been charged with three offences of sexual activity with an underage girl. He has also been formally accused of grooming a child.
Johnson, 27, will appear before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on May 20th, with Durham Police confirming the charges leading to his arrest.

A statement from the police reads: : “Adam Johnson, a professional footballer aged 27 from Castle Eden , County Durham has this afternoon been charged with three offences of sexual activity with a child under 16 years old pulse one offence of grooming.
“Johnson was initially arrested on Monday March 2nd and was charged after he answered police bail today at Peterlee police station.
“He will appear at Peterlee magistrates court on the morning of Wednesday May 20th.”

Johnson, who garnered 11 caps for England during his career, was arrested following a complaint reportedly made by a 15-year-old girl’s father. After an outpouring of premature (and altogether disgusting) support from Johnson, the girl’s name was then inevitably and unfortunately revealed on social media.

After his arrest Johnson was suspended by Sunderland, though the club then chose to reverse that decision and instead offered their support to the winger in the face of the allegations. A verdict will be decided next month.
