True Detective Director To Bring The Alienist To TV

Last year, Cary Fukunaga won an Emmy Award and critical acclaim for his work on HBO’s True Detective. Now Fukunaga’s next TV project has been set.

According to a report on Deadline, Fukunaga is set to direct and executive produce The Alienist as a TV miniseries in conjunction with Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. The Alienist is based on Caleb Carr’s 1994 novel that took place in the Gilded age of New York City (circa 1896).

The Alienist follows Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper reporter John Moore and police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt as they attempt to hunt down one of the first serial killers in New York City. Kreizler is the titular “Alienist,” which was an early term for someone who studied and used psychology before the twentieth century.

Hossein Amini (The Two Faces Of January) will write and executive producer The Alienist, with Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) also onboard as an executive producer.

In a statement, Paramount TV president Amy Powell said “Cary Fukunaga’s unique vision and ability to render compelling, distinctive and superbly atmospheric direction is the perfect voice for this television series. We are thrilled to have not only Cary’s expert direction, but also the creativity, imagination and storytelling abilities of the supremely talented Eric Roth and Hossein Amini.”

The Alienist doesn’t currently have a network attached, but that should change very quickly once Paramount TV begins shopping it around.
