Last week, AMC made the surprise announcement that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Ruth Negga had landed the female lead of Preacher. Today, Negga has been joined by her first male co-lead.
Deadline is reporting that British actor Joseph Gilgun has been cast as Cassidy in Preacher, the adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult Vertigo comic book series that was published in the ‘90s. The story revolves around Jesse Custer, a small town preacher imbued with the word of God that allows him to command almost anyone in existence. Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy join forces on a roadtrip to literally find God, after the Almighty abandons his post in Heaven.

As in the source material, Cassidy is a 100 year old vampire who is said to be “ the most wild-ass, bestest “bro” you’d ever want to meet. He may be 100 years dead but no one’s more boisterously alive than Proinsias Cassidy. An incorrigible mischief-maker, Cassidy’s up for anything — joyriding, bungee-jumping, bank robbing, peyote dropping. He’s also a relentless conversationalist with opinions on everything from religion to politics to pop culture to theories on why people are better able to tolerate the odor of their own flatulence.”
Gilgun has previously appeared in Misfits (seen above), Ripper Street, This Is England and the upcoming film, The Last Witch Hunter opposite Vin Diesel.
Ian Colletti who also recently cast as Eugene Root, aka Arseface, while Dominic Cooper is still rumored to be in talks to play Jesse.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are executive producing Preacher for AMC, with the pilot episode expected to go into production later this year.
