Ruth Negga Is Tulip In AMC’s Preacher

For the past two seasons of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ruth Negga has recurred as a nemesis to the team. But it looks like her days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are numbered.

Deadline is reporting that Negga has been cast in the female lead of AMC’s Preacher, an adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo series created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon that was published during the ‘90s. Negga will portray Tulip, an assassin and the former girlfriend of Jesse Custer, a small town preacher who becomes imbued with the word of God that allows him to compel almost anyone to follow his commands.

The main storyline of Preacher follows Jesse, Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy as they search for God after the Almighty abandons his post in Heaven. For the Preacher TV adaption, Tulip is described as “a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation.”

If Preacher goes to series, this would be Negga’s biggest role on American television to date. Previously, Negga has appeared in 12 Years a Slave, Fury, World War Z, Misfits and several British television programs. Negga also has a role in the upcoming Warcraft movie slated to be released next year.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg developed Preacher for television with Breaking Bad veteran Sam Catlin, who will serve as the showrunner. The pilot episode will be filmed later this year.
