Cory Michael Smith Is The Riddler on ‘Gotham’

All of the major cast members of “Gotham” have been signed. But there may be at least one more player joining Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel series.

Cory Michael Smith has signed on to “Gotham” as Edward Nygma, the brilliant scientist who is destined to become the supervillain known as The Riddler. Created by writer Bill Finger and artist Dick Sprang in 1948, The Riddler has gone on to become one of Batman’s most famous foes thanks to his compulsion to leave behind complicated clues that give Batman and the police a slim chance to predict his next move.

The Riddler was most recently played in live action by Jim Carrey in Batman Forever, although Frank Gorshin’s Riddler from the 1966 “Batman” TV series remains the most iconic onscreen incarnation. The Riddler has also been featured in several of the Batman animated cartoon series.

In “Gotham,” the pre-Riddler Nygma is described as a “socially awkward forensic scientist who’s eccentric and outgoing and desperate to be liked.” Smith is listed as a guest star in the “Gotham” pilot, but there is a chance that he could become a series regular.

Prior to landing “Gotham,” Smith appeared in the HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge” and the upcoming Camp X-Ray film opposite Kristen Stewart.

“Gotham” was ordered straight-to-series by Fox and it features a large cast including Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova and David Mazouz.
