Lions Axed Voss To Chase Paul Roos

It appears likely that the Brisbane Lions parted ways with former coach Michael Voss earlier in the week in an attempt to lure former Sydney Swans premiership coach Paul Roos to the club.

Roos is being courted with an alleged $1.5 million deal after Voss learnt at the beginning of the week his contract would not be renewed for the 2014 season.

Brisbane chief executive Malcolm Holmes told The Daily Telegraph that the club initially reached out to Roos six weeks ago about a coaching position.

“It was a phone call, going through due process and looking at potential candidates to see where he was at,” Holmes said. “It was the same conversation he would have had with Melbourne.”

Holmes confirmed Voss was told about the call, but said Roos wasn’t comfortable discussing the possibility of taking over while Voss, the former club champion, was still in the role of coach.

Lions chairman Angus Johnson denied on Thursday that Voss was let go to make room for Roos.

“His availability or non-availability played absolutely no role in the decision making process with Michael Voss,” Johnson said.

“I know there’s been comment contrary to that, but I was in the board meeting, I was heavily involved in the process, and there was absolutely no way in the world we were going to make a decision on Michael Voss on the belief we could appoint Paul Roos to be senior coach, when he’s said on more than one occasion that he’s not interested in coaching.”

The Demons are refusing to rule Roos out of their coaching search, believing the still has a chance of nabbing the coach according to AFL.com.au.

Melbourne are apparently interviewing Collingwood director of coaching Rodney Eade sometime this week after having interviewed Richmond assistant Mark Williams last week.
