Netflix Presents: Everything You Need To Know About Hemlock Grove

Earlier this month, Netflix premiered its newest original series, “Hemlock Grove;” which is based upon Brian McGreevy’s novel of the same name. McGreevy developed his novel for television alongside Lee Shipman before teaming up with director, Eli Roth and TV veteran Mark Verheiden to bring the story to life at Netflix.

All 13 episodes of “Hemlock Grove” Season 1 are currently available on Netflix. But before you dive into the show, this preview should give you everything need to know about “Hemlock Grove.”

For starters, Hemlock Grove is a small town in Pennsylvania that was once widely known for it’s steel mill that was owned by the powerful Godfrey family. In the present day, the steel mill has been shut down for years, but the Godfrey family has since moved on to become the owners of White Tower, a cutting edge biotech facility.

In the opening moments of the series, a young girl named Brooke Bluebell is savagely murdered near the old steel mill. And suspicion quickly falls upon Roman Godfrey and Peter Rumancek, two teens who form an unlikely alliance to get to the truth behind Brooke’s murder and clear their names.

But in Hemlock Grove, monsters are very real. And not everyone wears their monster on the outside…

Roman Godfrey

Roman (Bill Skarsgård) has a vested interest in solving the murder, and not just to clear his name. Roman is trying to redeem himself for his past sins and the ever-present darkness within his own heart.

Peter Rumancek

Peter (Landon Liboiron) is a gypsy and the new kid in town following the death of his uncle. Peter quickly becomes the target of rumors that he is a werewolf… rumors which are very true. After a lifetime of moving around from place to place, Peter has a unique view of the world and he isn’t about to be forced from yet another home.

Olivia Godfrey

Olivia (Famke Jansen) is the matriarch Godfrey family and the mother of Roman. Olivia’s past is mysterious and there are rumors that she’s not quite human. But Olivia is well known for being very manipulative, even with members of her own family.

Norman Godfrey

Norman (Dougray Scott) is Olivia’s former brother-in-law and her sometimes lover, who struggles to maintain his hold on White Tower as Olivia moves against him. Once, he might have been a good man. But now Norman plays the game of lies and deception almost as well as Olivia does.

Letha Godfrey

Norman’s daughter, Letha (Penelope Mitchell) is everything that he isn’t: sensitive, spiritual and virtuous. Letha is very close to her cousin, Roman… perhaps inappropriately so. Letha is also drawn to Peter, which will inevitably lead to conflict between Peter and Roman.

Christina Wendall

Christina (Freya Tingley) is a young novelist and a high school student who is intrigued by Peter. She’s also the first person to realize that Peter is a werewolf… which leads to some problems when that rumor takes on a life of its own.

Dr. Johann Pryce

Every good monster story needs a mad scientist. In “Hemlock Grove,” that role is filled by Dr. Pryce (Joel de la Fuente), a visionary who believes that he can create life from death. Pryce is a man who will do anything to pursue his agenda. ANYTHING.

Pryce’s lack of real human emotions may make him one of the deadliest residents in Hemlock Grove.

Lynda Rumancek

Lynda (Lili Taylor) is very protective of her son, Peter and she’s accustomed to being an outcast because of their gypsy heritage. Lynda is one of the few residents of Hemlock Grove who is unimpressed by the Godfrey family because she has something very rare to use as leverage against Olivia…

Sheriff Tom Sworn

“Battlestar Galactica” veteran, Aaron Douglas co-stars as Sheriff Tom Sworn, the man whose job it is to make sense of the mayhem and craziness of “Hemlock Grove” while attempting to keep the town from tearing itself apart.

Yeah… good luck with that.
