I’m a Pussycat: Ray Winstone on The Sweeney

Do you think Jack Regan could become a franchise character for you?

Yeah, I think this is a good question because we actually met today. We’ve got an idea for another story, so it looks like we’re going to go for a Sweeney 2, yeah.

How soon would that be?

Well, we literally sat down today and put the idea together and what the idea is in three stages. We’ve got a really good story so it’s as quick as they can get the dough together. It shouldn’t be a problem with the money because it’s done very, very well, the film. So obviously we’ve got that, that’s on our side. People seem to want to do it. Everyone that was involved with it wants to do it so there’s no reason why it can’t be sooner rather than later.

He’s already become a detective. Do you think Regan could go further in the force?

I don’t think so, no. I don’t think he plays that game. I think Regan’s a man on the street. I don’t think he’ll sit easy in the iron circles.

I guess there’s always new bank robbers for him to catch.

Oh yeah, there’s plenty of that.

What do you play in Noah?

I play Tubal-cain.

How is your experience on that film?

Well, you know you’re working with Russell Crowe. Really good guy and was a pleasure to work with, and Darren Aronofsky is genius. A great mate of mine, Mickey Rourke, was telling me all about Darren and how he’d worked with him, before I even knew I was going to go and work with him. So I had some knowledge about the man and the way he goes about his stuff. It’s very exciting. He’s not just a really good filmmaker, he’s a really good guy and all, you know. Have you come across him, Fred? Have you talked to him at all?

Yes, I’ve met Darren Aronofsky a few times fortunately.

Yeah, he’s all right, isn’t he?

He always has such an interesting take on his subjects. What is his take on the Noah story we think we know?

It’s set in the days, it’s set back in the time but you get that kind of vibe that it’s all happened before, that humanity and civilization was there before as big as it is today. It’s got that kind of ring to it as well, and the madness of Noah is a big thing. How do you look at someone who says, “I want to save all the animals in the world but not the people?” So it’s kind of a double edged sword really. When I first heard about it, I said, “Is it Noah’s Ark? We know what it’s about. Russell’s going to play Noah?” And I was laughing. Then I read the script. I understood it was Darren Aronofsky who was going to direct it which made me sit up. Then I read the script and I went, “Oh yeah, hold on a minute. This is really, really good.” His artwork is quite amazing on it as well.

Quickly, will you be in Snow White and The Huntsman 2 or the new Percy Jackson as Ares again?

Well, I don’t think I will be in Percy Jackson 2. I haven’t heard, I don’t think so. With Snow White, I know they’re going to make another one but I haven’t heard anything yet.
