New Sherlock Holmes TV Show in the Works With a Major Twist

A new Sherlock Holmes TV show is in development, but fans of the character may be surprised to learn what it’s actually about. Rather than focusing on the titular detective, the show will instead center on his archenemy: Professor James Moriarty.

With the character having originally been created by British author Arthur Conan Doyle, there have been countless TV shows and movies about Sherlock Holmes. Some of the more notable 21st-century include Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal in the Guy Ritchie films, Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance in the Sherlock BBC show, the contemporary CBS series Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, and more.

What else do we know about the new Sherlock Holmes TV Show?

Per Variety, Archery Pictures and Fremantle are now developing a TV show about the criminal mastermind James Moriarty. No casting information is available at this time.

The logline for the show, which is tentatively titled Moriarty, reads, “When a rival criminal begins an assault on his underground empire, Moriarty will have only one choice: to join the police as a consultant, using the law as a weapon to dismantle his foe while keeping his true identity hidden from the police. Paired with Detective Imogen Burrows, a stoic Yorkshire detective, they’ll form a fearsome team, but Moriarty will soon realise that the real threat isn’t the rival criminal faction he’s dismantling, but Imogen’s increasingly perceptive suspicions…”

Chris Cornwell and Oliver Lansley are writing the show, with Archery Pictures and Fremantle both co-producing.

“We are thrilled to be working with Fremantle to bring to life the original and character-driven spin-off from the Sherlock Holmes universe that Chris Cornwell has created,” Archery Pictures founder Kris Thykier said in a statement. “Moriarty will show audiences what it takes to be a criminal genius, combining genre thrills with a playful, dark, and thrilling dive into the psychology of villainy.”
