HBO Renews ‘Westworld’ For Season 2

For the last few years, HBO has been looking for a successor to Game of Thrones to carry the network when that series wraps up. It looks like Westworld may actually be just what the network was hoping for, as it’s been received well by fans and critics. With just three episodes remaining in the first season, Westworld has been given an early renewal by HBO, alongside fellow freshmen series Divorce and Insecure.

“I am thrilled to announce the pickup of our three fall series, all of which have distinctive, original voices,” said HBO President Casey Bloys in the official announcement. “Critics and viewers alike have welcomed Westworld and Insecure, as well as the return of Sarah Jessica Parker to the network after 12 years with Divorce.” Bloys also explained why he didn’t immediately renew Westworld after it opened to impressive ratings. “It came out strong but I wanted to make sure that it stayed strong and we had something great here.” All three series will receive ten episode orders for their respective second seasons.

Fans of Divorce and Insecure should be happy to hear that HBO plans to bring both of those shows back in 2017. However, Westworld fans are just gonna have to wait. Because of the long production time for the series, Westworld may not be returning to HBO until late 2017 or even some time in 2018.

Bloys also noted that Divorce received a “huge social media response from a passionate fan base” and added that “it represents a new voice, which was really important for us.”

Given the events of the most recent episode of Westworld, it’s not clear if the entire cast will return…or even what the show will look like in the second season. But perhaps we’ll get a better idea after the season finale next month.
