Don’t Worry: ‘Hamilton’ Will Be Filmed With The Original Cast

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton may be one of the most fascinating pop cultural phenomenons in years. The smash hit Broadway production about previously unsung founding father Alexander Hamilton has won Tony Awards, a Grammy and a Pulitzer Prize, and everybody is talking about it even though it’s almost impossible to actually see the danged thing.

Yes, tickets to Hamilton are harder to get your hands on than a teflon ferret, and the recent news that Lin-Manuel Miranda would be leaving the production on July 9 almost meant that most of the world would never get to see the original show with the original cast. Almost.

Fortunately, Miranda has taken pity on those of us who couldn’t get to New York City in time, and revealed to USA Today that Hamilton will be filmed before his departure. Two shows will go in front of the cameras, and off-screen cameos will be shot as well, meaning that Hamilton will live on in its original form for future generations to discover, much like the iconic filmed stage version of Into the Woods, featuring Bernadette Peters.

There’s no word yet on when or where, exactly, the filmed version of Hamilton will become available but we wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a television event or limited motion picture engagement before debuting on home video.
