The WTF Is Strong With This Crazy ‘Toy Story’ Ad From Japan

Ah…Japan, it’s a wonderful nation where nothing weird ever happens. And if they’re a little eccentric about their love for giant robots and giant monsters, at least that’s something that we can all love. Tentacle porn, probably not.

Apparently Bandai of Japan has teamed up with Disney•Pixar to create something quite strange: a reimagined Toy Story ad in which Sheriff Woody, Rex, Slinky, Hamm, and Bullseye pull a Voltron and combine to become Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star. There’s even a picture book and a TV ad to go with this, in which the aforementioned giant robot teamed up with another giant robot to take down Trixie, seen here as an oddly happy Kaiju.

It would be a lie to say that the ad wasn’t entertaining. But it was truly bizarre, even with the in-world explanation that it was just something that the toys’ current owner, Bonnie imagined with her friend. Toy Story is many things to many people, but giant robots usually aren’t part of the equation.

But overall, it’s pretty innocent fun that seems deserving of its own Toy Story TV special, of which there have been two-to-date. However, Pixar appears to be set on moving forward with Toy Story 4, which is set for June 15, 2018.

As for Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star, that’s coming much sooner. You can actually see pictures of the toys from that action figure line at Bandai’s official site.
