‘Supergirl’ Season 2 Lines Up Superman For a Guest Appearance

On the first season of CBS’ Supergirl TV series, the title character’s famous cousin was only glimpsed a few times and he didn’t have a large role on the show. But once Supergirl arrives on The CW, that’s gonna change immediately!

The CW has announced that Superman will be officially guest starring in the first two episodes of Supergirl season 2, which seems to be a pretty big draw for the network’s newest superhero drama. An actor has yet to be cast in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, but that’s bound to be one of the most coveted roles this summer.

In a statement, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said “Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”

Given Supergirl’s age on the series, it would make sense to cast an older actor as the Superman of her world. Perhaps someone in their mid-30s to early 40s. Former Smallville star Tom Welling would be the nostalgia pick, but there’s no indication that he’s even interested in reprising his role…or if The CW would be interested in him. At the very least, I’m hoping the new Superman gets to meet Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow just to note how physically similar they are to each other.

It’s not clear if this is a one-time deal, or if the new Superman will make occasional guest appearances on Supergirl. But potentially this could open the door to more previously movie exclusive DC heroes making an appearance on The CW’s superhero shows. Batman would be tough, considering that Fox has Gotham, but would Aquaman and Wonder Woman be out of the question? Arrow has already implied that Green Lantern exists in that world when it was noted that a test pilot (likely Hal Jordan) had disappeared.

Supergirl season 2 will premiere this fall on The CW.
