Jon Bernthal Returns For ‘The Punisher’ Series on Netflix

Last summer, rumors broke that Marvel and Netflix were already looking to give The Punisher his own solo series even before his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Daredevil season 2. And now, it’s official!

According to Entertainment Weekly, The Punisher is going to series with Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle/the Punisher. Apparently, The Punisher series was even further ahead than we were led to believe, as Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) is already signed to be the showrunner. That means the series could go into production as soon as this year for a 2017 premiere on Netflix.

Out of all of the Marvel heroes, the Punisher is the one who will likely benefit the most from the TV-MA content that Netflix allows. The first two Punisher movies attempted to soften the character, and even the R-rated Punisher: War Zone movie failed to connect with audiences. Bernthal’s performance as the Punisher in Daredevil season 2 was widely praised, which means that his incarnation of the character already has a fan following.

The Punisher will be the fifth live-action Marvel series coming to Netflix, and the first to fall outside of the original four series deal for Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. It’s not clear when The Punisher will premiere on Netflix, but Marvel TV is expected to announce more details later today. Additionally, the EW report hints that Bernthal may make an appearance in The Defenders miniseries that brings all of Marvel’s Netflix heroes together for eight episodes.
