Fox Orders ’24: Legacy’ Straight-To-Series

When 24 last signed off, Jack Bauer was hauled away to Moscow as a Russian prisoner, perhaps never to be seen again. Next season, the world of 24 is making a comeback on Fox with a new lead character…but no one from the original cast is expected to return.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has ordered 24: Legacy straight-to-series, with Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins as a military hero who is forced to work with CTU to save his own life and prevent “what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.”

Given that Hawkins previously recurred on The Walking Dead as Heath, one of the residents of the Alexandria safe zone and a long time supporting character in the comic, it seems likely that The Walking Dead television series will either write out Hawkins’ character or kill him off. Alternatively, Heath could be recast, if the producers are insistent upon using him.

Surprisingly, Kiefer Sutherland has signed on to 24: Legacy as an executive producer, but he will not reprise his role as Jack Bauer because he is currently starring in an ABC series called Designated Survivor. But with Sutherland’s involvement, the door for Jack’s eventual rescue from Russia can’t be completely closed.

24: Legacy will also star Miranda Otto, Jimmy Smits, and Dan Bucatinsky, with returning showrunners Manny Coto and Evan Katz, as well as executive producers Howard Gordon and Brian Grazer.

The biggest challenge for 24: Legacy is reinventing the show without falling back on the same tropes that dominated the first eight seasons. There are only so many ways to place a mole in CTU! Either way, the series will have a spot on Fox’s 2016/2017 TV schedule.
