Watch D’Angelo’s Moving Prince Cover ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ on Fallon

Very few contemporary music artists have come close to the depth and brilliance of Prince, either as live performer or studio musician. One who did (on both counts) was D’Angelo, who earned comparisons to the icon with the release of Brown Sugar in 1995. He then bolstered the comparisons with rigorously funky, no-holds-barred live performances in the years that followed. His return to music with 2014’s critically acclaimed Black Messiah after years in self-imposed exile showed he hadn’t lost a step, and this tribute performance to Prince will surely go down as one of his finest moments.

Joined by Princess, the Prince tribute act comprised of Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Leiberum on backing vocals, here’s D’Angelo with a moving performance of fan-favorite “Sometimes It Snows In April,” from Parade, the soundtrack to Prince’s last film Under the Cherry Moon.
