RIP: Prince Has Died Unexpectedly at Paisley Park Recording Studio

The artist known as Prince has died unexpectedly at 57 years old. His publicist has confirmed the news.

Prince’s body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning. The superstar, full name Prince Rogers Nelson, was hospitalized last Friday, April 15, after his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois. He had performed in Atlanta and had symptoms of the flu.

Jason Kamerud, Carver County chief sheriff’s deputy, has told members of the press that an investigation began on Thursday morning into a death at the scene. They initially withheld the name of the deceased as they notified next of kin. A few dozen people had gathered at Prince’s estate after hearing of a death there — and with the news of Prince’s passing, “even the journalists are hugging each other.”

The Minneapolis-born music legend released a staggering 39 studio albums throughout his life, including two just last year: HITNRUN Phase One and Two. Known lately just as much for his controversial statements on streaming services, recording contracts and beyond.

We’ll update this story as it develops.

We just lost Bowie. 2016 is taking our icons away far too quickly.
