Marvel and Netflix Name Showrunners For ‘The Defenders’

Since the premiere of Daredevil season 2, we’ve been eagerly awaiting word about a third season renewal. While there haven’t been any announcements about Daredevil’s future, Marvel TV and Netflix have locked up the second season’s creative team to take over The Defenders.

Marvel.com had the official announcement that Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez will be the showrunners of The Defenders. Petrie and Ramirez served as the showrunners of Daredevil season 2. What this means is that The Defenders will likely begin filming before any potential third season of Daredevil. And it may also mean that Daredevil will need new showrunners, or else it will go on hiatus until after The Defenders has been finished. Potentially, that would push Daredevil season 3 to late 2017 or early 2018. At the moment, Netflix is expected to premiere Iron Fist and The Defenders in 2017, and it’s not clear when Jessica Jones season 2 will arrive.

Drew Goddard will also be joining The Defenders as an executive producer. Goddard developed Daredevil for Netflix as the first showrunner before he departed to direct the Sinister Six film for Sony that ultimately fell apart. Steven DeKnight took over from Goddard as the showrunner of Daredevil season 1.

In a statement, Marvel’s Head of TV, Jeph Loeb said “We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on Marvel’s Daredevil speaks for itself. They write and produce not only great action and adventure but also the heart and touch of humor that makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we’ve got a team that’s as formidable as the Defenders themselves.”

The Defenders will unite the stars of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as a makeshift superhero team in the mold of The Avengers. Initially, it was expected that The Defenders miniseries would only be eight episodes long, but it is unclear if that is still the plan.
