Jon Bernthal Wants ‘The Punisher’ To Push The Envelope

After Jon Bernthal’s acclaimed turn as the Punisher on Daredevil season 2 earlier this month, the prospect of The Punisher getting his own Netflix series certainly seems like an inevitability. At the moment, Marvel TV and Netflix haven’t even revealed whether Daredevil is getting another season, much less their plans for the Punisher.

As for Bernthal, he appears to be ready and willing to reprise his role as Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, there was no question in Bernthal’s mind regarding whether he’ll be back. He just doesn’t know when.

“For me, it’s not a question of what they want to do with a character, its more, how are they going to do it, and who’s going to be the ones to do it,” said Bernthal during an interview with Collider. “This character is in my bones now, he’s in my blood. If they want to go forward in any way, for me it’s just really going to be about making sure we do it in a way that’s raw and intense. I want to push the envelope. I wanna alienate more of the audience and try to bring them back.”

It doesn’t seem like Bernthal’s Punisher would be a good fit for The Defenders team up miniseries coming to Netflix. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see Frank Castle on that show as well, but a solo series just seems like a better showcase for the character. Disney Chairman Bob Iger recently reiterated his opposition to Marvel Studios making R-rated films as a reaction to the success of Deadpool. The TV-MA Marvel shows on Netflix are probably the closest thing that Marvel fans will get to R-rated content, and that makes it the perfect medium for The Punisher.

But what do you think Marvel TV’s next move should be with The Punisher? Do you want to see Bernthal push the character even further? Take aim in the comment section below!
