Album Premiere: Grayshot Returns With Lush Heart on ‘Borders’

Minneapolis trio Grayshot will release their sophomore album Borders on April 1, with pre-order available now on iTunes, but Crave has the jump on the exclusive album premiere a few days early.

Brothers Aaron Ankrum (vocals, guitar, keys) and Christian Ankrum (bass, keys, vocals), alongside Reese Kling (drums) wrote, recorded and produced Borders out of their Minneapolis studio, just as they did on their debut. The band also enlisted Huntley Miller (Tallest Man On Earth, Poliça) for mastering. The result is Borders – a lush warmth and gentle ’80s pop sensibility ensconce Grayshot’s sound in an atmosphere that works in both those late-night magic moments as well as the hazy morning afterglow.

The band was faced with a true test of grit nearly from the onset, embarking on a four week tour of Europe shortly after Aaron broke his hip in a tragic streak of bad luck. Nevertheless, the determined outfit completed the entire tour, all while on crutches. Tilling the stony soil of misfortune paid off: Grayshot built a solid momentum of fan dedication along the way, on top of glowing praise in the media, and performed for a royal family of Poland before being invited to play the largest prison in Scotland.

If you recognize Grayshot’s sound, chances are you’ve caught them on TV shows such as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” in commercials for Buick, CBS college football and beyond, as well as in the UK film, Love Me Do.

“When we released our debut full length a couple of years ago, we toured extensively in support,” the band explained to Crave. “The songs on that album started to get some love on both TV and film and we just stayed on the road for a while. We knew we wanted to make another record, but wanted to make sure it was right. There was no time table. We started pulling songs together to make this album. We had to wrestle our way through some of them, others came together quickly, a few needed space to breathe before they opened up. There was a gravity pulling us towards these songs so we were OK with taking the time needed to make it right. In the end, we were able to capture their energy and life and now we get to share it with you. This is Borders.”
