11 Action Movie Sequels That Overshadowed The Original

We used to say that “sequels suck” all the time, because usually, sequels sucked. Movies were made for the better part of a century without any thought or consideration about a follow-up. Stories were told in their entirety the first time, forcing any sequels to start from scratch, repeating and often undoing what worked in the original just to pry more cash from the fingers of fans.

But over the last 25 years, that paradigm has changed. Studios embraced franchises so tightly that they throw most of their resources at sequels and reboots, and as a result quite a lot of recent movie sequels have been pretty darned good. And action movie sequels have improved as much or more than any other genre. Heck, superhero movies alone have tipped the scales in favor of sequels, in which filmmakers no longer have to recap a familiar origin story and can finally just play with all the toys in their toy box.

Not just good movies, not just equal to the first film, these action movie sequels had better stunts, smarter plots, and in some cases laid the foundation for the whole franchise to come.
