Though Coldplay and Beyonce may have taken to the stage together during the Super Bowl 50’s halftime show, the two acts had trouble agreeing to a collaboration in the studio.

According to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, he had previously presented a song to Beyonce titled ‘Hook Me Up,’ which he played in the studio for her alongside her producer Stargate. However, according to Martin she was less than happy with the results. Martin claims that she turned him down “in the sweetest possible way”, adding: “She told me, ‘I really like you – but this is awful.'”

Martin’s admission was made during an interview with the Rolling Stone, though it isn’t the first time he’s been rejected by a global megastar. Following David Bowie’s death earlier this year, Martin revealed that he had once sent the legendary singer a track in the hope of collaborating with him, only for Bowie to promptly reject it. Martin revealed that he had received a letter from Bowie, which simply read: “It’s not a very good song, is it?”

However, Beyonce and Coldplay would eventually settle on a song they both liked, with the singer joining the band on their song ‘Hymn for the Weekend.’ Taken from the band’s latest album A Head Full of Dreams, the combined star power of the two acts has led to it racking up nearly 40 million views on YouTube.

But despite its popularity online, the track struggled to make a dent in the UK charts, only placing at number 60 in its peak position. Beyonce isn’t credited on the single.
