Instagram Launches First Drama Series, Shield 5

It looks like Instagram just won’t be satisfied with being one of the internet’s most popular photo-sharing apps. Today, Instagram launched its first scripted drama series, Shield 5.

Anthony Wilcox (Hello Carter) and Adam Dewar are the co-creators of Shield 5, which features a script by Dewar with Wilcox as the director. Shield 5 stars Christian Cooke as John Swift, a security driver in London who finds himself accused of participating in a diamond heist and murdering his colleague. Swift goes on the run from the police and the people who framed him in a desperate attempt to prove his innocence. Wallis Day costars in Shield 5 as Amy Williams, with Kieran O’Brien as Doyle, Elliot Gleave as Ray, and Joseph Mydell as Yorke.

Shield 5 will be released in 15-second episodes, with 28 episodes slated to be released this month. The first episode has been posted below.

Each episode of Shield 5 will also be accompanied a photo that helps place the episode in context. For episode 1, the photo is John Swift’s wanted poster:

This is a very ambitious move for Instagram, but not entirely unexpected. Instagram’s parent company is Facebook, and it was only a matter of time before Facebook entered the original programming realm. Instagram and Facebook have dubbed Shield 5 “social cinema,” and we’ll soon see if that term sticks.
