TNT CCO Explains Why He Passed on DC’s Titans

In 2014, TNT placed a Titans TV series into development based on DC Comics’ Teen Titans, with a focus on Dick Grayson, the former partner of Batman as he transitioned from Robin to Nightwing. Given the superhero content on the major networks and in movie theaters, Titans seemed like a sure bet to go to series.

But earlier this week, TNT announced that Titans is not going forward at the network and the project is essentially dead. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Television Critics Association press tour, TNT Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly was pretty blunt in his reasons for passing on Titans.

“Akiva [Goldsman] is a talented guy, [but] the script just wasn’t there,” said Reilly. “There is an unbelievable glut of superhero things in the market right now and if you have a really good one, clearly people are up for it. But I just don’t think that there’s a need for one that, for me, at least on paper didn’t seem to be screaming to get made.”

Reilly may not be a comic book fan, or else he probably would have realized that Titans could have let him use more established Batman characters in costume than even Gotham gets away with! Among the Batman related heroes, Dick Grayson is second only to Bruce Wayne himself. The Titans pilot also reportedly featured Barbara Gordon (another fan favorite character) as Oracle alongside more traditional Titans members including Starfire and Raven.

But don’t despair Titans fans. Outside of the Justice League, the Titans are one of DC’s most popular super teams. Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are bound to try to make Titans again in the future. There’s even a rumor that the previously announced Cyborg feature film may turn into a Titans movie. However, that’s far from confirmed.
