Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has slammed Jose Mourinho for his treatment of Chelsea’s medical head Eva Carneiro, after Carneiro was devoted for seemingly just doing her job.

Carneiro has been caught in the eye of a storm of controversy surrounding events that had taken place during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Swansea last weekend, after she took to the pitch to tend to an injured Eden Hazard. Mourinho was left enraged by her actions, with him stating that she “didn’t understand” football and claiming that her actions were wasting time when the club could have gone on the attack in stoppage time.

But Wenger, who has long had a heated rivalry with Mourinho, has defended Carneiro during a press conference ahead of his club’s match against Crystal Palace, saying: “It is a problem inside the club that if you are not united, it is more difficult. It is the trust and unity that makes the strength.”

He continued: “You know you speak about that story at Chelsea. First of all I have not followed that as you know I do not have great interest about what is going on at Chelsea. Secondly the rules are quite clear that when the referee gives an indication that the medical (staff) can come on, they come on.”

Carneiro has been roundly defended by many in the footballing world, and with good reason – while she raised the ire of the Chelsea manager and received a harsh punishment as a result, being ruled out of attending any first-team matches with the club, footage later revealed that the referee of the match had signaled for Carneiro and Chelsea’s medical staff to take to the pitch in order to see to Hazard, despite Mourinho protesting against what he had claimed was the doctor’s own decision.

It seems unlikely that Carneiro would want to stay at Chelsea given her demotion and the controversy that has surrounded her position at the club, but neither she nor Chelsea have yet to offer an official statement regarding the matter.
