Melbourne music and arts festival Sugar Mountain is all set to return in 2015, with a brand-new location and sweet-as lineup, topped by none other than Brooklyn rapper Nas performing his seminal 1994 debut Illmatic in full.
Nas has remained one of the most respected names in hip hop for the last 20 years. Illmatic is considered a classic and one of the most influential rap records of the 90s. With definitive tracks like N.Y. State of Mind and The World Is Yours, Australian fans will bear witness to the entire album, from The Genesis to It It Ain’t Hard to Tell, performed live.
The Sugar Mountain 2015 lineup also boasts avant-garde LA rocker Ariel Pink, Seattle electronic duo ODESZA, and guitar duo Body/Head, one half of which is former Sonic Youth member Kim Gordon.
Sugar Mountain will be putting on a special one-off show called Terrible Love with the help of Brooklyn label Terrible Records. Terrible Love feature previous Sugar Mountain shit stirrer Kirin J. Callinan.
A slew of visual artists will be displaying their talents as well, including Melbourne’s own Ash Keating, American painter, filmmaker, and stop motion animator Abby Portner, and French illustrator/musician duo Nonotak.
Having taken place at The Forum for the last three iterations of the festival, Sugar Mountain 2015 will see the festival shift to the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) after taking a break in 2014. The larger setting means next year’s event will have five stages, two indoor and three outside.
Sugar Mountain has also sought the assistance of local restaurants and bars to make the festival a fest for the ears and mouth. More details on Sugar Mountain’s cuisine will be released in the lead-up to the event.
Sugar Mountain is happening on Saturday, 24th January 2015. Tickets go on sale 9am local time Monday, 20th October with a capping capacity at 5,500 tickets. So make sure you’re online and ready to snatch up tickets from Moshtix or Sugar Mountain Festival.
