WTF?! Gotye Forms New AU Political Party

[Update: While his political party ambitions remain intact, Gotye has denied that he’s running for Parliament]

Remember that painted-up naked dude from that “Somebody That I Used To Know” video? If you’ve listened to Gotye’s record, it’s pretty damn clear that the guy’s a one-hit wonder. Seriously, that album is garbage. But there’s no shame in being a pan-flash hit, as the world has seen a blizzard of one-hit-wonders fade into obscurity after a short celebrated run. But while his music may not move the needle much anymore, obscurity’s not what this particular Aussie has in mind.

Gotye has formed a political party with his band, The Basics. According to The Guardian, the singer – real name Wally De Backer – plans to run in Victoria’s state election in Australia this November under the party name the Basics Rock’n’Roll Party. The three main drives of the party reportedly include innovation, education and of course, rock ’n’ roll.

Party objectives include first-aid training in schools and more access to music in rural areas. Unfortunately, the party needs a good deal more support before it can establish any legitimacy (and what’s not legit about rock n’ roll politicians? /s) – 500 members music be registered with the Victorian Electoral Commission in order to be eligible for the election this November.

To learn more, visit Gotye’s Facebook page, which now doubles as a campaign page. At this time it doesn’t appear that Kimbra will be his running mate.
