Interview: Korn’s Ray Luzier Talks Mayhem Fest, Korn’s 20th Anniversary & More

The world’s biggest heavy music touring festival has returned with guns blazing – The Rockstar Mayhem Festival is now underway, with this year’s traveling metal odyssey headlined by Korn and Avenged Sevenfold.

Crave headed out to the breathtaking Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado for an unforgettable experience at high altitude. In between crushing performances by A7X, Miss May I, Asking Alexandria, Ice-T’s Body Count and more, we caught up with Korn drummer Ray Luzier backstage.

Exclusive: Korn Explains ‘Lullaby For a Sadist’

Watch below as Ray and Paige Montgomery discuss the Mayhem experience at Red Rocks, one of the greatest venues in the world, as well as the re-release of The Paradigm Shift with two new songs, and how the band doesn’t ever really have a cycle in recording and touring – it all blends into one big musical run. It’s been a landmark year for the band and for Luzier personally, putting his hands in cement for Korn’s Hollywood RockWalk and celebrating the return of Brian “Head” Welch to the band. Fans should pay close attention to the end, for details on the band’s next record and a tease on what’s in store for Korn’s 20th anniversary.

As our host Paige & videographer Joshua Lowe report, the backstage was like a man cave, with bands hanging out in what amounted to a lodge inside of a mountain. People were also rock-climbing on the rocks backstage, highlighting the fun and lighthearted atmosphere among the attending artists. Despite the intensity of performance onstage, the rest of the experience was like a day off for the bands at one of the most scenic venues in the world.
