Jack White ‘Lazaretto’ Vinyl Breaks Pearl Jam’s 20-Year Vinyl Record

It’s hardly news that Jack White is the modern torch-bearer for vinyl records. The Third Man Records honcho – and Bonnaroo 2014 MVP – just obliterated a 20-year-old record with 40,000 vinyl copies of his new LP, Lazaretto, in its first sales week. Pearl Jam had previously held the title for their 1994 album Vitalogy, which sold 34,000 vinyl units.

Review: Jack White’s Lazaretto is a Rorschach of The Soul

When the musical Willy Wonka decks out his vinyl releases with mindblowing tricks, goodies and even a damned hologram, it’s not hard to imagine the public leaping for the goods.

Lazaretto’s popularity isn’t relegated to old fashioned mediums, however, as it also landed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 138,000 units sold total, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

James Donio, the President of the Music Business Association, cited that Lazaretto’s vinyl success “proves there is an appetite for physical formats, especially for artists who go the extra mile to offer something truly unique,” Donio said.
