Xbox One External Game Storage “Coming Soon”

Although the Xbox One is no longer the DRM, digital-heavy console that it was initially announced to be, there’s still a high demand for more storage. Let’s be real here, 500GB isn’t that much in today’s day and age where game installs surpass the 10GB mark, and AAA game can take up over 30GB of space each. I don’t even have all of my digitally owned games installed and 35% of my hard drive is already full.

Microsoft is perfectly aware of the demand for external storage solutions. Furthermore, Major Nelson posted the following on Reddit:

External game storage is coming soon….I need to check on media support.

The PS4 similarly doesn’t support external game storage. However, the default hard drive can be replaced in the case of the PS4, allowing users to throw down just under $100 for a 2 terabyte hard drive if they’re really concerned about storage ever being a problem. Xbox One users will have to rely on external solutions after the promised update.

Additionally, Microsoft is working on more upcoming updates that add new features and polish already existing integrations. Given the monumental success of February and March’s updates, I’m excited to see what’s being cooked up.
