Five Possible Big Day Out Blur Replacements

The Big Day Out went down a headliner over the weekend when Blur unexpectedly withdrew from the January festival over the weekend. Here are five possibilities to take Blur’s spot.

The likes of Waaves and Wolfmother have already put their hands to jump in place of Blur, which would probably lead to more refunds than anything else, but there are a handful of candidates (seriousness may vary) that could save the festival’s open spot.

The Artic Monkeys are considered one of the favourites to join Arcade Fire and Pearl Jam atop the Big Day Out bill. They have already promised Aussie fans a 2014 visit, but participating in the BDO would mean cancelling a bunch of sold-out US shows taking place at the same time…

Would Kings of Leon fly all the way back to Australia after last week’s brief visit? They were part of the 2006 BDO and don’t start their next batch of touring until early February.

Lorde is the world’s newest international superstar and has a modest history of joining Australian festivals at the last minute- she jumped when Frank Ocean bailed on Splendour in the Grass at the last minute earlier in the year. However, an appearance from the 17-year-old would be hard to accomplish considering her Laneway festival commitments clash with the final stages of BDO.

It has been a while between tours from The Strokes, but recent headlines could see the band make a Big Day Out comeback. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture said the guys have no intention of touring their most recent record, this year’s Comedown Machine, but that was before the band sent out a fan email in October saying they are “looking at 2014 for a return to the scene”.

The most unlikely, but the most attractive? Daft Punk would almost ensure sell-outs across the nation if they were to attend. ‘Get Lucky’ partner Nile Rodgers is also heading to Australia, but about two weeks too early…
