Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur’s fatal shooting, Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Davis is the only individual ever charged and convicted in connection with Shakur’s murder. Prosecutors claimed Davis acted out of revenge after Shakur and his crew previously beat Anderson, Davis’s nephew.
A Deadline report highlights that Davis was convicted of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon earlier this year. Ahead of his conviction, Davis had discussed his involvement in the murder in his memoir, Compton Street Legend, as well as in statements to police and the media. However, he maintained his innocence since his 2023 arrest. The case remained unresolved for decades until Duane’s conviction, marking a significant step towards achieving justice for Tupac Shakur.
Following the conviction, Davis said, “I’m good. I’m appealing this case for sure.” While delivering the final sentence, Judge Carli Kierny told him, “You don’t get to take a man from his family. You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future, from him…especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.”
Tupac’s family demands maximum sentence as Davis vows to appeal
Before sentencing, Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa Shakur and stepbrother Maurice ‘Mopreme’ Shakur urged the court to impose the maximum sentence. “The loss of Tupac, for a long time, crippled my family,” Sekyiwa told the court, according to the BBC report. “He had so much promise, intentions for a better world.”
Prosecutors cited Davis’s memoir, public comments, and a confidential 2008 police interview as evidence that he orchestrated the killing. Davis had previously claimed that he supplied the murder weapon used in the crime. He had also acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from which shots were fired the night of Shakur’s murder.
Camron Jones will soon portray Tupac Shakur in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic.
