7 Years Later, Pedro Pascal & Ben Affleck’s Action Movie Gets Unforeseen Sequel Update

The door hasn’t slammed shut on a follow-up to the Netflix action hit starring Pedro Pascal and Ben Affleck’s that debuted seven years ago, leaving the possibility of another team-up alive. However, the sequel still has hurdles to clear before cameras can roll.

Netflix’s Triple Frontier sequel could happen

During an interview with ScreenRant, Garrett Hedlund gave a positive update on Triple Frontier 2. He said the team had already taken a first pass at the screenplay, and another writing effort could give the project fresh momentum. He described the prospect of reuniting the cast as appealing, adding that “the theme is never say never.” He added, “So, it would certainly be fun to get the band back together on that one.“

The 2019 film brought together Hunnam, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund and Adria Arjona. Directed and co-written by J.C. Chandor, the story followed former U.S. Army Delta Force operatives who traveled to Colombia to steal an enormous cash stash from a drug lord. Complications derailed their plan, leaving potential threads for a continuation.

Despite questions about its hefty price tag, the film drew a sizable audience on Netflix. Ted Sarandos, who served as the platform’s chief content officer at the time, highlighted its reported 63 million views in the opening months. That success came against earlier reports that the movie had fallen short of expectations given its estimated $115 million production cost.

A return for Ben Affleck would likely mean switching sides of the camera rather than reprising his original role, since his character dies in the first film. He could potentially help shape a follow-up as a producer or director.

Meanwhile, Charlie Hunnam’s involvement as a producer offers the most concrete indication that a sequel remains under consideration. Hunnam cautioned The Mary Sue some years ago that the project was in its “absolute infancy,” but said he had more to explore about the lives of military personnel after service.
