ABC Rehires Popular Broadcaster Two Years After Controversial Firing

ABC has reversed one of its most criticised programming decisions, confirming that a familiar voice will return to 702 ABC Sydney’s schedule in March 2027. The broadcaster announced on Wednesday that the presenter will host Afternoons, filling the slot left vacant after James Valentine’s death in April.

ABC Radio rehires Sarah Macdonald

ABC director of audio Ben Latimer, who removed Macdonald from Mornings in 2024, confirmed Sarah Macdonald’s rehire. He said listeners had made their feelings clear. “We’ve heard just how much 702 ABC Sydney listeners have missed Sarah, and I’m delighted she has agreed to return,” Latimer said. “There’s something special about Sarah taking on Afternoons. She knew James well, she knows the audience, and she understands what the program means to them.”

Macdonald learned of the decision when ABC managing director Hugh Marks texted her on April Fool’s Day requesting a meeting. She described the role as an honour. “James was my friend and a legend in my lunchtimes as both listener and colleague,” she said. “I am both emotional and thrilled to carry on his legacy.”

For those unaware, her 2024 axing sparked widespread anger. Macdonald told listeners at the time: “I’m not going to be on the radio with you next year – the ABC has decided not to renew my contract here at Mornings.” She noted that ratings had risen and she had broken major stories during her tenure (via The Guardian).

Now, the return of Macdonald to ABC also addresses a gender imbalance. The station’s 2027 lineup between Breakfast and 6 p.m. otherwise features men, after Thomas Oriti replaced Chris Bath in Drive.

Craig Reucassel stays on Breakfast, and Hamish Macdonald on Mornings. 702 ABC Sydney manager Nick Lowther welcomed the appointment, saying: “Sarah is one of those broadcasters who builds a genuine, lasting bond with her audience.”

James O’Loghlin and Kathryn Robinson, who have carried Afternoons since Valentine’s death, will remain regular voices on the station, with O’Loghlin continuing until Macdonald starts. ABC will announce further 2027 lineup details later this year.
