2 Beloved Nintendo Franchises Get New Games Announced, See Trailers

Nintendo has unveiled two major Switch 2 games from its legacy franchises during its Nintendo Direct this week. The jam-packed show included reveals from over 30 games, giving fans a sneak peek at the console’s upcoming lineup.

The first major reveal included a new title in the Metroid franchise. Metroid Ravenous is a side-scrolling sequel to 2021’s critically acclaimed Metroid Dread. Players will once again step into the boots of Samus Aran, fighting her way out of an unknown moon.

The trailer shows glimpses of the familiar 2D action and platforming the franchise’s fans have come to love. It also includes many gameplay moments showing Samus facing off against terrifying new foes. It also shows Samus using a new power to consume her enemies.

Nintendo also announced the Metroid Ravenous amiibo lineup, and Metroid Ravenous: Special Edition will be released on the same day as the game. Metroid Ravenous will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027, and it will cost $59.99. It is available for pre-order now.

Elsewhere, Nintendo also announced the next game in the Kirby franchise, Kirby and the World Beyond. The upcoming 3D game seems to be a much more open adventure compared to the pink puffball’s previous outings. The game will be released just in time for the franchise’s 35th anniversary next year. Like previous games, Kirby will be able to copy and use the abilities of enemies to dispatch them.

The trailer also shows Kirby using a weapon that fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise will recognize. At one moment, Kirby is shown running around with and using the Master Sword, which can be used to affect the environment as well. Another moment shows Kirby using the sword to break down an environmental barrier, opening up to a vibrant land that looks similar to Hyrule.

The previous Kirby game, 2022’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land, was released to critical acclaim, scoring 85 on Metacritic. The franchise saw one more release, Kirby’s Dream Buffet, released in 2022.

Kirby and the World Beyond does not have a set release date, instead targeting spring 2027.
