Sandra Bullock’s Practical Magic 3 Can Only Happen on 1 Condition & It’s Obvious

Sandra Bullock once thought she would never revisit one of her most misunderstood movies. Now that the story has returned decades later, she has already identified what would need to happen before another Practical Magic 3 gets made.

Sandra Bullock on if Practical Magic 3 can happen

Sandra Bullock revealed the condition during a Vanity Fair interview while discussing Practical Magic 2. She and Nicole Kidman returned as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, while Joey King and Maisie Williams joined as the younger witches Kylie and Antonia. Bullock sees those characters as the natural bridge to another installment.

“If this takes off,” Bullock said, “we’ll do a number three,” but she does not want to simply repeat the original formula. Her plan involves handing the franchise to the younger women, effectively letting them carry the Owens family’s magic into its next era. “We’ll pass the torch to the girls,” she said.

That confidence marks quite a turnaround. Bullock remembered the 1998 original as a movie she and Kidman loved making, even though its initial reception hurt. She said the story’s focus on female relationships, witchcraft, motherhood, and domestic violence faced dismissive attitudes toward movies centered on women.

The revival became meaningful for another reason. Bullock brought personal grief into the sequel after her partner, Bryan Randall, died in 2023 following ALS. She described the experience as “art imitating life” and allowed the writers to draw from her emotions, including pain and humor.

Bullock and Kidman also took a hands-on approach behind the scenes. They chose Susanne Bier to direct, wanted the sequel to preserve the first movie’s atmosphere, and added details for longtime fans, including a Stevie Nicks song and visual callbacks. Bullock said the filmmakers wanted newcomers to enjoy the movie while giving returning fans familiar touches.

The actress has spent years pushing beyond the romantic-comedy image established by movies such as Speed, While You Were Sleeping, and Miss Congeniality. Her later work included Crash, The Blind Side, Gravity, and many more.
