Netflix has decided to bring Dungeons & Dragons to screen with “Ravenloft”.
John August will write and executive produce the drama, while Alfonso Cuarón and Hasbro Entertainment will serve as executive producers.
‘Ravenloft’ will bring one of ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ darkest settings to live action at Netflix
Netflix is developing the fantasy world of “Ravenloft,” one of the darkest settings in the game. Tracy and Laura Hickman introduced Ravenloft in 1983, making it one of the most-played settings in Dungeons & Dragons. The setting has spawned more than a hundred official novels, tabletop RPG modules, video games, companion rulebooks and countless fan creations.
The series combines horror-fantasy, gothic horror and tragic romance. “Ravenloft” and its “Domains of Dread” tell character-driven stories filled with magic and supernatural influences. The series will center on the origin of vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich. Like an origin story, it will chart his transformation from a tragic antihero into a dangerous villain.
The project has no connection to “The Forgotten Realms.” The latter was a separate live-action series set in the D&D universe. Deadline reports that Netflix is no longer developing the series.
Netflix already explores similar gothic horror territory with “Wednesday,” which Tim Burton has directed and executive produced.
Writer and producer John August has built an impressive body of work in fantasy and supernatural projects. He has written five films directed by Tim Burton.
Executive producer Alfonso Cuarón returns to Netflix with the drama after eight years. Previously, his movie “Roma” premiered on the platform. The film about a domestic worker earned 10 Oscar nominations.
