Michael Keaton’s latest thriller has wasted little time finding an audience. The movie arrived on Netflix very recently and within days, the Robert De Niro-led mystery had climbed above several heavily watched titles, putting a fresh spotlight on the film.
The Whisper Man is topping Netflix’s streaming charts already
FlixPatrol’s August 30 Netflix chart placed The Whisper Man at No. 1 among movies, ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, The Secret Woman and Facing El Chapo. The ranking gives the thriller an early streaming win.
James Ashcroft is behind the camera for the $50 million AGBO thriller, with Anthony and Joe Russo also serving as producers. Adam Scott leads the story as Tom Kennedy, a grieving crime novelist whose young son suddenly vanishes one night.
With nowhere else to turn, Tom reconnects with his estranged father, Pete Willis, a former detective played by Robert De Niro. Pete’s past work on a serial-killer case could be the key to finding the missing boy. Michael Keaton takes on the role of jailed murderer Frank Carter, with Michelle Monaghan rounding out the cast.
The cast brings an extra dose of nostalgia, too, with Robert De Niro and Michael Keaton sharing the screen again after Jackie Brown. Adam Scott has described watching the two seasoned stars reunite as something huge. “It was a big deal on set that these guys were going to do a scene together,” Scott told People.
The streaming buzz doesn’t quite match the critical reception. The film currently sits at 6.3/10 on IMDb, while Rotten Tomatoes gives it just 42% from critics and 43% from audiences. The cast has earned some applause, particularly for the seasoned performances and bleak mood, but the story hasn’t escaped criticism. Reviewers have pointed to its predictable plot and shaky tension, with many calling it watchable while arguing that the story takes a flat and familiar trail.
