A popular Netflix title has landed the streamer in an unexpected trademark fight. Christian metal group Demon Hunter has taken legal action against Netflix and AEG Presents, arguing that the name KPop Demon Hunters clashes with the band’s long-established commercial identity.
Netflix sued by Christian metal band Demon Hunter over hit movie
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday through the band’s corporation Hyde Lane and obtained by TheWrap, centers on how closely the two names resemble each other. The group claims Netflix and its partners were “almost certainly aware of” Demon Hunter before releasing the 2025 animated film. The filing says the band has spent decades building recognition through albums, tours, and merchandise
The dispute gained extra weight as the movie expanded beyond streaming. Its soundtrack and merchandise became major parts of the franchise, while Netflix teamed with AEG for a worldwide concert tour planned across 150 cities.
Hyde Lane argues that expansion pushes the two brands into increasingly similar territory and could leave audiences thinking the band and entertainment franchise have some business connection.
That alleged confusion forms the heart of the case. Hyde Lane describes Demon Hunter as the “senior user” of the mark and says the defendants’ larger reach has effectively drowned out the band’s identity. The complaint argues that Netflix and AEG have used their resources to overshadow a name the group claims it established first.
The band also accuses the defendants of unfair competition and false designation of origin. Its filing says the group has suffered commercial and reputational harm and has been “forced to surrender control over its commercial identity” because the companies have greater financial and market power.
Hyde Lane wants more than a legal acknowledgment. The lawsuit seeks treble and exemplary damages, an injunction, Netflix’s profits tied to the disputed branding, and reimbursement for attorneys’ fees. The band also requested a jury trial, although it says the total damages remain undetermined.
