Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg explained why the new NBA champions, the New York Knicks, should visit U.S. President Donald Trump‘s White House. Following rumors that the team declined Trump’s invitation, Knicks owner James Dolan confirmed yesterday that he had actually accepted the White House’s invitation. At the moment, it’s unclear if all of the Knicks players will be attending the said event.
What did Whoopi Goldberg say about the Knicks visiting Donald Trump’s White House?
During the recent episode of The View, Goldberg, who’s known as a staunch Trump critic, surprised viewers when she supported the idea of the Knicks team visiting the White House. She explained the significance of the Black players’ attendance, revealing that this could be a way to show everyone, especially young children, that “nobody can keep you down.” She stressed that the team’s visit isn’t a show of solidarity with Trump, but it could be a powerful way to reclaim “our house” since it belongs to the American people.
“I want them to go. I want all those Black men to stand in our house and remind all of those people, as we tried to remind the vice president, that when you try to destroy one part of history, you’re destroying all of our histories,” Goldberg said (via TV Insider). And they, as champions, not only as amazing basketball players, but as people who were down and came back up, [can say], ‘This is what this looks like. Yeah, this is what this looks like.’ So I want them to go, I want them to go. If only so the kids know that nobody, nobody can keep you down.”
Last June 13, the New York Knicks had a historic win over the San Antonio Spurs during Game 5 of the NBA Finals. This marks the team’s first NBA championship in 53 years. Finals MVP and point guard Jalen Brunson scored a total of 45 points during the game, leading the team to victory.
