Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil movie, inspired by Capcom’s popular horror video game franchise and now in post-production, is heading to theaters later this year. Recently, rumored details about the narrative emerged, revealing what to expect. The rumored plot also seemingly confirms Cregger’s claims that the film would be an original story and not include any established characters from the franchise, like Leon S. Kennedy.
What Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is about revealed by rumor
A new rumor reveals that Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is an original story, while also mentioning the key location and organization from the games it adapts.
Notable scooper MyTimetoShineHello shared the supposed plot details on X (formerly Twitter). It reads, “Basically about a guy sent to deliver a bag that he thinks has organs in it. Then he gets stuck in the ice on the way, hits a zombie lady, gets pulled over by the cops, gets chased by a dog, gets chased by zombies that turn out to be alien zombies.”
The story description continues, “He meets Paul Walter Hauser who works for Umbrella Corporation and has to go to Raccoon City and then has to get the cure up to the 28th floor of the main building.”
Resident Evil premieres in theaters on September 18, 2026. It will be the eighth film in the franchise and the second reboot following Johannes Roberts’ Welcome to Raccoon City, released in 2021.
Cregger, who previously helmed Barbarian and Weapons, shared that the upcoming horror thriller will be nothing like them. “It’s going to be a rock ’em, sock ’em… it’s for me to play,” he teased while speaking to Ringer Movies. “And turn my brain off and just make an… Evil Dead 2… get crazy with the camera.”
Furthermore, he labeled the film “a love letter to the games.” He also called it a story he wanted to write, irrespective of whether he got the rights to the IP or not.
Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, in addition to directing. Austin Abrams stars in the film alongside Paul Walter Hauser. Other cast members include Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson.
