Tony Hale-Led Comedy Scrapped by Hulu After Buffy Reboot Cancellation

Hulu has elected not to move forward with another television pilot. This was after they scrapped plans for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, ordered last year. Notably, the streamer has ordered several pilots, out of which one was picked up for a series.

Don’t Get High pilot canceled by Hulu

Shortly after abandoning the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot New Sunnydale, Hulu canceled the pilot for Don’t Get High, as per Deadline. Megan Ganz and 20th Television created the comedy, which Tony Hale was set to headline. Besides him, it starred Ashley Brooke, Olivia Gill, Oscar Williams, Erin Morton, and Daniel Rosales. The pilot was first reportedly ordered in May 2025, according to Variety.

Ganz assumed writing, executive-producing, and showrunning duties, while Adam Fishbach and Mara Herron also served as executive producers. The series revolved around “an alpha dork and her merry gang of dweebs.” Attempting to make friends and influence people, they unsuccessfully launched an anti-drug group in high school.

Hale was cast as Officer Popkey, who was described as “a school cop who [took] his job way too seriously,” as per Variety. Meanwhile, Brooke took on Penny, an “alpha dweeb” focused on taking down the cool kids at school.

Gill essayed Lennon, Penny’s archnemesis and the school’s “most popular girl.” Williams assumed the role of Dylan, “a brooding bad boy,” while Morton played Lane, Penny’s best friend who was “eccentric and loyal.” Rosales was cast as Trevor, Penny’s second-best friend and “mistanthrope” who preferred to “fade into the background.”

Don’t Get High was among several YA pilots Hulu ordered to expand content offerings in the area. The platform is yet to give an update on whether fellow YA pilot, Foster Dade, starring Jack Alldridge and Chloe East, is moving forward or not. However, last year, it ordered Connie Britton and Sam Nivola’s comedy-mystery pilot Phony to series.

The streamer recently picked up several pilots but has not yet given final word on them. They include the drama Durango, the reality TV/murder conspiracy Lex, Southern Bastards, a drama based on the eponymous graphic novel, and Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot.
