Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski’s latest film has strongly resonated with critics, who have nothing but praise for the film’s style, vision, and theme. The story follows a time traveler from the future, who enlists the help of several patrons of a Los Angeles diner to stop the threat posed by a rogue artificial intelligence.

What critics are saying about Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die

Critical reviews for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die are predominantly positive. They praise the film’s humor, overall vision, themes, and Sam Rockwell‘s performance.

Looper‘s Reuben Baron wrote in his review, “You have to respect the sheer vision of this film, even if that vision doesn’t always cohere.” He also praised Rockwell’s performance, claiming it was his best since his starring role in Duncan Jones’ Moon. He stressed that although the film bounced between high and low moments, Rockwell’s “comedic energy and madcap conviction” never wavered.

In addition, Baron compared the film to Mike Judge’s Idiocracy, highlighting both films’ satirical depiction of major social truths and Verbinski and Judge’s similarities in incorporating a “mix of mostly righteous but sometimes off vibes” in their stories. However, he opined that Verbinski’s filmmaking style was “more visually exciting” compared to Judge’s.

Meanwhile, Aidan Kelly of Collider called the film “a very open-ended, satirical take on a grim dystopian future.” However, he noted that the film may not be for everyone. Kelly stated, “The broad strokes [the film] takes may not appeal to someone looking for a tighter, more linear tale.”

YouTuber and film reviewer Sean Chandler shared in his review, “Verbinski delivers a dark, timely, and wildly funny satirical time-travel romp. The premise might sound familiar, but the execution feels entirely fresh and new.”

Cinapse‘s Dan Tabor said in his review that the film reminded him of Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block. He labeled the film “a surreal cyberpunk masterwork that actually did its homework and isn’t afraid to dig into the more controversial symptoms and consequences of our actions as a society.”
